This program is designed for people who are forced to flee from their country of citizenship due to a well-founded fear of persecution, AND who are outside of their home country and can’t return, AND want to seek protection in Canada. This program includes the subcategories below:
1. Refugee inside Canada:
If you feel you could face risks to your safety if you go back to your home country or the country where you normally live, (needs a second clause: if, then). These risks of persecution are defined in the Geneva Convention as: risk of torture, risk to your life or the risk that you may be subjected to cruel and unusual treatment or punishment. In such cases, you may be able to seek protection in Canada as a refugee or protected person.
2. Refugee outside Canada
To come to Canada as a refugee, you may require a referral from the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), a designated referral organization, or a private sponsorship established in Canada.
